MOTION was born in Toronto, Ontario as Wendy Brathwaite to Antiguan and Barbadian parents. She adopted the name “Motion” because it depicted the rate at which she began showing her talent. An award-winning emcee/poet, playwright, screenwriter & Hip Hop artist, Motion’s fusion of word, sound and drama is a potent mix of the ancient to the futuristic. Heavily influenced by the reggae, calypso and soul music of her childhood, Motion’s creativity extends beyond writing to the realm of spoken word and hip hop. Motion’s career accolades include a MuchMusic nomination for Best Rap Video Award, and the UMAC Award for Best Hip Hop Radio Show. She won the 2002 CBC National Poetry Face-Off competition. As a teenager, she was already a member of the Master Plan Show on CIUT 88.5 FM - the longest running hip hop radio program in Canada. Motion has been featured in a wide range of compilations including collaborations with the Butta Babees, The Entrée EP (Universal), Phem Phat’s Honey Drops (Universal), Rap Essentials (Beat Factory), The Best of Bounce (Jig Saw), the international B-Gyrl.com collection, Urban Noize, and on the soundtrack for the film When Moses Woke (Itoti Productions). She also performed at the 2004 Canadian Urban Music Awards aired on CBC Television. Her lyrical agility has also taken her to the stages of Manifesto Jamaica and HBO Def Poetry Jam. Lauded by Now Magazine as a “multi-talented, truthful artist,” Motion flipped the page of northside lit with the release of Motion In Poetry and 40 Dayz, writing and producing Aneemah’s Spot, which debuted at the Rock Paper Sistaz festival, and other featured works at Obsidian and Factory theatres, Luminato, Summerworks Festival and Young Centre for the Arts. Inspired by her work with the legendary Fresh Arts movement, MotionLive continues developing emerging talent in creative spaces such as Lit 4 Life, Urban Arts and the Caribbean International Literary Festival. About a young college student who, through psuedo friendships, get’s dragged into a dangerous situation (IDEK, Action/Thrillers aren’t my forte!). At first, she’s understandably frightened.
But, soon enough, her fear becomes rage.
And the assholes who caused her pain better RUN!
